This weekend we made our new liquor cabinet that Jeannette has wanted for a long time. The reviews said it was difficult to put together and they weren’t lying. It wasn’t a matter of following the 10 page book of directions, but figuring out how to make your own directions when the book didn’t work. It was a crazy long night. We started loading it up today (note: our skylight is a little bright in some of the pictures).
We moved the bikes and bike rack to the back stair to make room for the cabinet. We also managed to finish the kitchen and the eating area today (even managed to eat at the table today). We have to leave a stool and cardboard contraption blocking the bottom of the fridge from kitty paws. It’s like astro turf made of rodent poison under the fridge – which also attracts & kills kitties. So that’s another project for another day: moving the fridge and performing a strategic eradication of poison.
Another remaining project for the kitchen is to hang a spice rack on the wall by the sink (removing the massive spice clutter from the microwave). Jeannette still needs to recaulk the countertop too, maybe next weekend when Josh hangs blinds.
Enjoy the photos. We’ll take non-phone camera photos soon.
It’s really starting to feel like home! (And Jeannette LOVES her cabinet!)

You can take the kids out of the college dorm, but they still want a big f’ing liquor cabinet.
And forget a spice rack – you need a hanging pot rack. No kitchen is complete without a pot rack.
How did the drip pan situation work out?
By the way, everything looks lovely, including the new chairs and the liquor cabinet.
That is one serious liquor cabinet. Geez. Place looks amazing.
Josh should draw up a quick floorplan so I can better understand
the lay of the land. I’m confused about what’s on the other side
of the railing in the last photos new to the table and chairs.
Love the cabinet! The place is looking good. Enjoy!
So, Jon – Josh informs me that while, yes, it is a liquor cabinet, I should be referring to it as a “sideboard”. I say: tomaytoe, tomahtoe. Needless to say, CB2 calls it a mini bar. So maybe that is most appropriate. As a side note: We do think of the Sheehy clan when we open it, as all our barware is in there, and they were all wedding gifts from them! They all fit so nicely into the “mini bar”!
Also, on your second point, I like my pots and pans and all. They are very nice, but I think they would look cluttery and just too easily collect dust. Not to mention there is already no headroom anywhere in our kitchen. And I LOVE my spices. I collect them. They make me happy. And the idea of a nice, tidy-looking spice rack is super appealing to me.
And thanks everyone on the nice things you’ve said. We love our place (and I love my sideboard/mini bar).
Thadd, the only thing on the other side of the railing is those stairs which are inside our apartment. You open our front door and immediately walk up a set of stairs. The ceiling above the stairs is the skylight. The banister/railing thing protects you from falling down from the main living space into the tight, tiny stairwell. Our front door is on the third floor, but our apartment is really on the fourth… Maybe that helps a bit. Josh drew up a floor plan – maybe he can email it to you.
